Ductile Iron is an alloy of Iron, Carbon and Silicon, also known as Spheroidal Graphite Iron or Nodular Cast Iron. The process of manufacturing Ductile Iron involves adding magnesium to low-sulfur molten iron. Due to the reaction with magnesium, the excess carbon (graphite) present in the iron forms as multiple small nodules and the resultant product is known as Ductile Iron.Ductile Iron is preferred to Cast Iron because while it retains the corrosion resistance of Cast Iron, it has more than double the tensile strength [Cast Iron- 180 MPa (min), Ductile Iron – 420 MPa (min)]. Cast Iron is brittle because the graphite is present in plate-like flakes. On the contrary, in Ductile Iron, the shape of the graphite becomes a spheroidal nodule, which offers better mechanical properties and makes Ductile Iron sturdy, structurally stronger and shock-proof.. Ductile iron pipes are as per IS:8329/2000 grade k-7 & k-9.

Ductile Iron Class K7 Pipes can deal with less pressure than Ductile Iron Class K9 Pipes. The pressure rating of K7 ductile iron pipes & Ductile Iron Pipe Class K7 varies and this would base on the Nominal Wall Thickness and the Nominal Diameter of the pipe. The weight of would differ as this would be dependent on the size of the pipe. The number ‘7’ in Class K7 implies pressure class of the Ductile Iron Pipe Class K7 and 7 represents the pipe’s internal pressure withstanding capacity. |
K-9 |
Yes |
Ductile Iron K9 Pipes are capable of dealing with much more pressure than Ductile Iron Class K9 pipes. The weight of K9 pipes depends on the thickness and the size of the pipe. Class K9 DI pipe specification depends on the Nominal Wall Thickness as well as the Nominal Diameter of the pipe. DI K9 Pipes are heavier than Class K9 Ductile Iron Pipe. |
K-12 |
No |
Ductile iron Class K12 pipes are utilized all over the globe today, as such pipe are corrosion resistant and they also provide ductility, toughness, and strength. The wall thickness of Ductile Iron Pipe Class K12 is 7mm. For both Ductile Pipe Class K9 and K12 nominal pressure ratings, pressure rating come into play within the temperature range from -10 C to 80 C. |
These pipes are widely used for conveying raw water & distribution of treated water in majority of rural water areas, where the requirement of water is less. Mostly medium quality Galvanized Iron are used. The Galvanized Iron are cheaper, lighter in weight and easy to handle & transport & easy to join them. Galvanized Iron sizes vary from range 15mm to 150mm. Generally screwed & socketed pipes are used. The Galvanized Iron welded Pipes shall be manufactured from hot rolled steel strip for welded gi pipes conforming to IS 10748 or Cold-rolled low carbon steel sheets and strips conforming to IS 513. The welded galvanized steel are then passed through sizing sections where any dimensional deviation are being corrected. Galvanized Iron are then pressure tested for any leaks. The Galvanized Iron are then cutted into desired lengths by automatic cutting machines. The varnishing and galvanization of pipes are done as per specific requirements. Also Galvanization is a process in which steel or iron is coated with a layer of zinc to protect them from rusting or corrosion.

Cast iron pipe is a pipe which has had historic use as a pressure pipe for transmission of water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe during the 19th and 20th centuries. It comprises predominantly a gray cast iron tube and was frequently used uncoated, although later coatings and linings reduced corrosion and improve hydraulics. Cast iron pipe was superseded by ductile iron pipe, which is a direct development, with most existing manufacturing plants transitioning to the new material during the 1970s and 1980s. Little cast iron pipe is currently manufactured.
